Chance in the Everett Interpretation

چکیده
For the purposes of this chapter I take Everettian quantum mechanics (EQM) to be the unitary formalism of quantum mechanics divested of any probability interpretation, but including decoherence theory and the analysis of the universal state in terms of emergent, quasiclassical histories, or branches, along with their branch amplitudes, all entering into a vast superposition. I shall not be concerned with arguments over whether the universal state does have this structure; those arguments are explored in the pages above. (But I shall, later on, consider the mathematical expression of this idea of branches in EQM in more detail.) My argument is that the branching structures in EQM, as quantified by branch amplitudes (and specifically as ratios of squared moduli of branch amplitudes), play the same roles that chances are supposed to play in oneworld theories of physical probability. That is, in familiar theories, we know that

Modal Metaphysics and the Everett Interpretation
Recent work on probability in the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics yields a decision-theoretic derivation of David Lewis’ Principal Principle, and hence a general metaphysical theory of probability; part 1 is a discussion of this remarkable result. I defend the claim that the ‘subjective uncertainty’ principle is required for the derivation to succeed, arguing that it amounts to a th...
متن کاملThe Everett-Wheeler interpretation and the open future
I discuss the meaning of probability in the Everett-Wheeler interpretation of quantum mechanics, together with the problem of defining histories. To resolve these, I propose an understanding of probability arising from a form of temporal logic: the probability of a futuretense proposition is identified with its truth value in a many-valued and context-dependent logic. In short, probability is d...
متن کاملEpistemology Quantized: circumstances in which we should come to believe in the Everett interpretation
I consider exactly what is involved in a solution to the probability problem of the Everett interpretation, in the light of recent work on applying considerations from decision theory to that problem. I suggest an overall framework for understanding probability in a physical theory, and conclude that this framework, when applied to the Everett interpretation, yields the result that that interpr...
متن کاملRelative Frequency and Probability in the Everett Interpretation of Heisenberg-Picture Quantum Mechanics
The existence of probability in the sense of the frequency interpretation, i.e. probability as “long term relative frequency,” is shown to follow from the dynamics and the interpretational rules of Everett quantum mechanics in the Heisenberg picture. This proof is free of the difficulties encountered in applying to the Everett interpretation previous results regarding relative frequency and pro...
متن کاملDiscussion: Byrne and Hall on Everett and Chalmers
Byrne and Hall (1999) criticized the argument of Chalmers (1996) in favor of the Everett-style interpretation. They claimed to show “the deep and underappreciated flaw in any Everett-style interpretation”. I will argue that it is possible to interpret Chalmers’s writing in such a way that most of the criticism by Byrne and Hall does not apply. In any case their general criticism of the many-wor...
متن کاملTime, Quantum Mechanics, and Probability
A variety of ideas arisiüg in decoherence theory, and in the ongoing debate over Everetts relative-state theory, can be linked to issues in relativity theory and the philosophy of time, speci cally the relational theory of tense and of identity over time. These have been systematically presented in companion papers (Saunders 1995, 1996a); in what follows we shall consider the same circle of id...
